ACR The Beast is a camera stabiliser based on the operation of brushless motors, several precise sensors and sophisticated control firmware. Complex and simply difficult shots and takes, which often required huge efforts including the usage of advanced CGI or custom, expensive, built-from-scratch rigs, become a child’s play with The Beast. Even the most demanding scenes will come out completely stable with the horizon on perfect position – where every operator wants it to be. The compatibility with various additional equipment allows for shots that were impossible to film before. Every professional operator will greatly appreciate the possibilities of working with The Beast not only while handheld but in pair with cranes, multirotor drones, in Inverted Mode and many other options. Thanks to feedback we received from users of genuine The Beast gimbals, the new V2 edition was equipped with new electronics and LEMO connectors. High quality cables and a new powering system are capable now to run without generating significant amounts of heat during daily work with RED cameras. A number of additional improvements were implemented in the stabilization software. A precise Autotune algorithm, a balance check system, three different Follow profile algorithms, autotrimming for Thumbstick and remote controllers – these are only a few new Beast capabilities. Iconic functionalities remain unchanged – an incredible OnBoard Manager with keyboard, voice messages and the OLED screen allows to configure basic and advanced settings in a blink of an eye. Even with the RED Dragon, The Beast equipped with large battery is able to power both gimbal and camera for one and a half hour. Easy to run, full of settings for professional users – a dreamed-of equipment for medium camera users.
Three-axial stabilisation is not a simple task. Many of the devices available on the market offer varying results. We are not afraid to tell our Users – use long focal lengths! Run, jump, travel quickly with The Beast! The hybrid technology will make sure that your shots are genuinely cinematic and first of all – stable.
Three motors are responsible for the three axis of rotation. Each motors includes an angle encoder – a type of sensor allowing to count the angle of rotation of each axis in real time with the precision of hundredths of a degree. Additional two three-axial gyroscopic sensors and accelerometers monitor the horizon level to be maintained at all times during operation. Twin powerful Cortex microprocessors do the processing of all this data and along with some advanced coding turn a shaking run of an operator into a beautiful, clean take.
Some clever design of the mechanical elements of The Beast was required in order for the electronics to work as desired and deliver such results. The motors were custom-built for The Beast to match our requirements of maximum power and super-fluent transitions between various camera angled positions, The construction is exceptionally solid and compact thanks to the usage of various aluminum alloys, inter alia the very rigid 7075 aluminum and carbon fiber. A special type of finish – the technical anodization – gave a beautiful, matt look to the whole concept. This results in the device not shining due to external light sources during a shot when it is absolutely necessary to not produce any glare.
Can be powered from standard, small Li-Ion batteries fitting inside a dedicated compartment within the stabilizer pan axis tubes or a large Li-Po battery dedicated to power up, for example, a a stabilizer and a camera together. The Beast itself can work on the small batteries alone for more than 10 hours! The Intelligent Charger with built-in balancer allows to charge both types of batteries with correct settings. Another unique feature is that various external accessories can also be powered up straight from the main power source via two auxillary power outputs – on the vertical arm and on the camera tray. Such accessories include wireless follow focus systems, wireless video transmission and the camera itself. The power management is very efficient and allows for powering up even a RED Epic camera along with accessories when using the large battery or an external professional VMount or Anton-Bauer Battery, which can even be placed off the actual gimbal rig with an extension cable (for example in an operators Belt Bag ) to save precious weight!
The back of the gimbal houses another great feature – a small OLED screen and a control panel connected with our unique OnBoard Manager software. This allows for full configuration without any kind of external input! The Beast also tells you about the current configuration, running profile, battery status and many other things with its own voice – it is a talking gimbal! The OLED screen is very bright and clearly visible even in full sun. The magic of The Beast resides here – you have complete control over this amazing piece of engineering just using this small screen and keyboard. You have direct access to every important function either during the preparation process or during live shots – everything only takes seconds to set! This feature almost completely voids the need of using any computers or tablets to set the gear up. It all becomes plug’n’play & easy – setting a new standard!
The electronics can be very complex but what matters for the end user is the simplicity of usage. In case of The Beast you do not have to deal with strange parameters of Ps, Is and Ds or similar, as the other gimbals require to have set and tuned for the best results. Our solution has only three power sliders setting the motors performance. That’s it! The things got even simpler after we introduced special algorithms that setup the powers for you during a few moments of the Autotune procedure. Using a stabilizer has never been so easy!
The unique, very characteristic operating mode for the handheld user, the famous Follow Mode, allows you to catch smooth, cinematic takes based on a very responsive and fluent natural movement control system. Additionally the camera position can be controlled via a dedicated Thumbstick or using an external remote control equipment.
The Beast can work in various states thanks to some special stabilization and control coding. The basic operating mode is the Xtended Stabilization – a mode which keeps the camera position in one place and facing one point in space regardless of the gimbal position. This behavior is usually used in pair with remote movement control on multirotor drones, cranes, JIBs. You can always switch to the smooth Follow Mode where the stabilizer follows your movements with a configurable delay and removes unwanted jitter and leaning in real time. This function can be toggled on all three axis separately.
Each of the movement control options can be used in a special and very comfortable global mode called Inverted Mode. In this mode The Beast is working upside down and the camera is above the handheld module. This allows for some convenient, natural eye-level shooting without introducing too much fatigue to the operator’s arms. Many users also use the built-in camera feedback screens instead of external ones in this mode. The Inverted Mode is also commonly used when The Beast is attached to RC cars, JIBs and other uncommon platforms.
You can also control The Beast via a cabled, analog Thumbstick or using external remote control devices, such as Graupner radios.
